Chaska’s City Square West Project: A Vision for Downtown Revitalization

Chaska is embarking on an ambitious redevelopment initiative known as the City Square West project, designed to invigorate the downtown area by introducing a blend of residential, commercial, and public spaces.

Project Overview

Located directly west of City Square Park, the City Square West project encompasses the block bordered by Chestnut Street/Highway 41, Pine Street, 3rd Street, and 4th Street. The redevelopment plan includes:

  • Mixed-Income Housing: The project will feature apartments, with 20% designated as affordable housing for residents earning 50% or less of the median income.
  • Public Plaza: A central gathering space is planned to host community activities such as markets and concerts.
  • Commercial Space: The development will include new commercial areas, potentially featuring a restaurant to enhance downtown’s dining options.
  • Paseo: A pedestrian-friendly pathway will connect various destinations and parking facilities, promoting walkability in the area.

Project Goals

The City Square West project aims to:

  • Create a public gathering space and pedestrian connections in the heart of downtown Chaska.
  • Add economic value to downtown through a mix of residential, retail, and plaza spaces.
  • Build a plaza for community activities.
  • Establish visual connections with surrounding downtown blocks.

Funding and Timeline

The project is a public-private partnership. Recognizing its potential as a regional destination, the city secured $5,425,000 in funding from the State Legislature in 2023 and is seeking an additional $7,825,000 in 2026.

Community Impact

By integrating housing, commercial spaces, and public areas, the City Square West project is poised to enhance the vibrancy of downtown Chaska, offering residents and visitors a dynamic and welcoming environment.
